Robert L. Matthews, 80, of Belmar, died on November 12. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Josephine Matthews and by his wife Judy, to whom he provided loving care.
He will be forever cherished by his daughter, Ronda Cluff and her husband, Michael of Galloway; his granddaughter, Grace; his brother, Howard, of Lakewood; and many nieces and nephews including Kim Griffith of Georgia.
A lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, he retired from the US Postal Service (Spring Lake) and pursued his passion for fishing full-time. He was a keeper of local history and a recreational saltwater fishing expert. He co-founded the Spring Lake Live Liner Fishing Club in 1977. Post-retirement, he worked at Fishermen’s Den where he could be found holding court with the old-timers and mentoring young anglers.
His positive approach to life earned him friends from all types of careers, educational backgrounds, and belief systems. He was welcomed nearly everywhere and he was welcoming to everyone he met.
He was a role model, particularly to his daughter, and was his granddaughter’s biggest fan. Because he supported many charities, please honor him by donating to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Another way to honor Bob’s life is to make sure you get your cancer screenings. Early detection saves lives!
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
