LEWISTON, Maine — The body of a 40-year-old man suspected of mass murder here was found dead at a recycling center Friday night that was twice passed over by law enforcement in the days before he was found.
Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck said Saturday that Robert Card was found in a box trailer in an overflow parking lot of the Maine Recycling Corporation that had not been checked when authorities searched the site two times.
Sauschuck said police cleared the trailers in the main part of the recycling center but did not know there was an overflow parking lot associated with the business, which had an “employment relationship” with Card.
A paper style note was found by law enforcement at Card’s residence in Bowdoin, Sauschuck said. The note was authored to a loved one and included the passcode for Card’s phone and bank account numbers, Sauschuck said.
The note was written with the “tone and tenor” that the author was not going to be around when it was found and that the loved one it was addressed to had access to important information.
Authorities said card was found dead Friday at 7:54 p.m. by Maine State Police.
“I stand here tonight to simply report that the Maine State Police have located the body of Robert Card in Lisbon. He is dead. I called President Biden to inform him about this news,” Maine Gov. Janet Mills said Friday night at City Hall. “But this discovery is entirely thanks to the hundreds of local, county, state and federal law enforcement members from all over and people from other states as well.”
Law enforcement said Card killed 18 people and injured 13 others at a bowling alley and pub in the city.
Previous Boston Herald materials were used in this report. This is a developing story…
