AVON-BY-THE-SEA — The board of commissioners adopted a bond ordinance on Monday, Oct. 23, following a public hearing, to fund repairs of the backup sewer pump.
The measure appropriates $17,500 for the repairs and authorizes the borough to issue $16,500 in bonds to finance part of the cost. It passed with “yes” votes from both Avon Mayor Ed Bonanno and Commissioner Robert Mahon. Commissioner John Magrini had left the meeting early and thus did not participate in any of the votes.
The pump had experienced a high level of strain during the recent storms, tasked with pumping significantly more water than usual.
Mike O’Brien, superintendent of the Avon water/sewer department, had said during the Oct. 10 meeting, when the ordinance was introduced, that the pump was already pumping a higher amount of water than usual, because the borough’s other pump was undergoing repairs. During recent rain storms, that amount rose significantly.
