Stacy Martin, the mother of Karns City senior quarterback Mason Martin who is battling for his life after collapsing during his team’s season-opener back on Sept. 1, has died.
WPXI reported that McKenna Martin, Mason’s sister and Stacy’s daughter, announced the news Sunday with a post on Facebook.
Stacy Martin had reportedly been battling breast cancer.
“Today, October 15th, my mom Stacy finally got to rest,” McKenna posted. “It’s been a long battle. It’s been incredible to see everything that she’s endured all these years and the way she was able to do it all with a smile on her face. My mom constantly put others before herself, even when she needed the most help. She was loved by so many, and I can guarantee that the world will never be the same without her. I know for a fact that she will be watching over Mason, my dad, Sydney and me. She fought to the very end. She could’ve quit ages ago, but she didn’t and she’s passed that fighting spirit on to so many others, including her boy, Mason. It’s with a heavy but happy heart that I can say she doesn’t have to fight anymore, her suffering is over, and she can rest now. I love you, Mom, until we meet again.”
Sydney Martin, Stacy’s other daughter, also posted on Facebook following her mother’s death.
“My beloved mother has finally got to rest,” she wrote. “The battle she fought was difficult, but she always made sure to never worry anyone. She went through all the good news and bad news with a smile on her face. She constantly would put others before herself and she’s truly changed the world and everyone around her. She put a smile on any persons face that she met. She made sure to never worry anyone. She never told anyone that she was hurting, she only smiled. She is a listener and you can ask anyone and they would agree. She always listened to me and gave me advice, even if I didn’t ask for it. She will be watching over Mason, my dad, MCKenna, and me. She could have quit as soon as it got rough but she didn’t, she kept fighting. She was the light in a dark room. Her fighting spirit has been passed down to everyone, including her boy, Mason. It may be sad to hear it but she can finally rest. We love you mom and I know you are watching over every single one of us. Till we meet again. I love you momma.”
WPXI.com reported that Karns City School District Supt. Eric Ritzert also issued a statement following Martin’s death.
“On behalf of the entire Karns City area community, our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Martin and King families,” it read. “Stacy battled her illness with great strength and courage. She will always be remembered for the life she led and her support of others. Please continue to pray for the family.”
The heartbreaking news comes just days after doctors attempted surgery to re-attach Mason Martin’s cranial flap. In a statement shared to the Karns City football team’s X page, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, his father, Denny Martin, said that doctors decided not to put the flap back on because “conditions just weren’t perfect.”
“He is doing well and recovering,” Denny wrote. “The plan for now is that we just wait until some time next week and try again. Thanks for all the prayers.
“One thing we have never felt throughout this is alone. I thank you all #MasonStrong.”
Martin collapsed on the field during the third quarter of his team’s Sept. 1 game against Redbank Valley.
Martin scored his team’s only touchdown in the game. According to D9Sports.com, he had just played a defensive series and went out on the field as part of the kick return team when the head official, identified as Mike Vasbinder, said he saw the player “wobble and sway.”
The report said that Vasbinder said he asked Martin if he was OK and the player responded, “No,” before he fell to the turf.
He reportedly suffered a collapsed lung and a brain bleed.
