Eric G. Appel, 69, of Manchester, formerly of Hopelawn, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 7th, 2023.
He was a graduate of East Brunswick High School, after which he worked in his brother’s construction business before joining the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department, where he served for 26½ years, rising to the rank of lieutenant, teaching the county First Aid Squad, and heading the county’s Underwater Search and Rescue Unit, before retiring.
In his retirement Eric pursued his lifelong passion for magic, amazing countless audiences filled with children of all ages. He was a man who delighted in giving shape to his imagination, through the storytelling of magic, the woodwork and crafts that he made for friends and family, and the caricatures and portraits he would draw for those closest to him.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Maureen Appel (née Leahy); daughter, Jennifer Bennett Silverman and her husband, Todd; son Ryan and his wife, Crystal; sons Kyle and Glenn; son Eric and his wife, Kerry; grandsons Eric ‘EJ’ Bennett, Luke Appel, and Sebastian Appel; granddaughters Molly Bennett, Emma Bennett, Piper Appel, and Sophia Appel; and his magical traveling companions Sizzle Schnizzlebits and the Great Gorilla Blue. He is also survived by his brother Carl F. Appel and his wife, Linda, and several nieces and nephews.
His cremation was private, but his family will hold a celebration of his life in the coming weeks.
