Sr. Maryjohn Lamb, SU, (Mary Elizabeth Lamb) died on October 6, 2023 in Red Bank, NJ. She was a Sister of St. Ursula for 57 years. Sr. Maryjohn was born in Kingston, NY, the daughter of the late John and Marie Lamb.
She was a graduate of St. Peter’s School, Rosendale and the Academy of St. Ursula in Kingston, NY, Class of 1962. She received her B.A. from the College of Mount St. Vincent, New York, NY with a major in English.
Maryjohn entered the Society of St. Ursula in 1966 and pronounced her final vows in 1975 and that same year completed an MA in Biblical Studies at Providence College. In 1986 she received a Professional Diploma in Spirituality from Fordham University.
From 1968 until 1991, Maryjohn served in various ministries for her religious community. She taught at St. Joseph’s School in Kingston, NY, and St. Gregory the Great in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as well as Notre Dame School in Manhattan. She was also involved in spirituality programs both at Mt. St. Alphonsus Seminary in Esopus, NY, and the Linwood Spiritual Center in Rhinebeck. Her volunteer work at Peoples Place in Kingston and in a soup kitchen in Middletown, Connecticut was an important part of these years as well.
Beginning in 1991 Maryjohn cared for her mother with dedication and devotion until her mother’s death in 2004.
She was predeceased by her parents John and Marie Delaney Lamb, and a sister Kathleen Lamb Giampetruzzi. In addition to the members of her community, Sisters of St. Ursula, she is survived by her sister the Honorable Elizabeth Lamb and her brother-in-law, Dennis Selmont of Spring Lake, NJ who lovingly cared for her over these last years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Linwood, 50 Linwood Road, Rhinebeck, NY 12572 on Thursday, October 19 at 11:00 AM. Calling hours will be at Linwood on Thursday, October 19, from 10 AM -11:00 AM. Burial will be on Friday October 20, 2023 at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston, NY.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Sr. Maryjohn may be made to the Sisters of St. Ursula or Linwood Spiritual Center, 50 Linwood Road, Rhinebeck, NY 12572.
