A Philadelphia police officer was killed and a second officer was injured in a shooting in a parking garage at Philadelphia International Airport late Thursday night, officials said.
The 50-year-old officer and 60-year-old officer, who both worked in the Airport Unit, arrived at a parking garage and were ready to begin their shifts shortly after 11 p.m., police said.
As they exited their vehicles, the officers spotted a group of people breaking into another vehicle inside the parking garage, according to investigators. As the officers approached them, at least one person in the group pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said.
The 50-year-old officer was shot multiple times in the upper torso while the 60-year-old officer was shot at least once in the arm.
Both officers were taken to the hospital. The 50-year-old officer died from his injuries while the 60-year-old officer is stable.
Officials have not yet revealed the identity of the slain officer but said he served in the department for 22 years and is survived by a wife and child.
The surviving officer is a 20-year veteran of the department.
Police said a person matching the description of one of the suspects in the shooting was also taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and later pronounced dead. They have not yet determined if that person was involved in the shooting however.
A heavy police presence could be seen at the airport after the shooting. Terminal D was closed at the airport due to the investigation. It was later reopened after midnight. The parking garage for terminals D and E remains closed.
