Peter R. Fischer of Bristol, Maine, passed away on September 16, 2023 after a 21 month battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
Peter was born in Philadelphia, PA, to Ramsay and Elisabeth Fischer. He spent every summer in Mantoloking with his family including his grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. He loved body surfing competitions with his cousins, fishing with his dad and never missed the ice cream man! Peter would also take trips to Holland to visit his ‘Dutch’ family at their home by the sea.
After graduating from Lower Marion HS, Peter spent time at Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs where he developed his love for hiking, skiing, climbing and being with nature. Peter’s parents retired to Mantoloking but he knew he needed to be somewhere else…. Peter, at age 20, with some ‘Jersey Boys’ headed to Maine. This is where he met his wife, Carol, and lived where he was happy in nature.
Peter’s career path encompassed many aspects of the marine industry. While working for the Dept. Of Marine Resources he inspected seafood processing facilities. He later worked for two of the largest seafood companies in Maine. Peter started his own mussel aquaculture operation, Pemaquid Mussel Farm. He later launched Maine Fresh Sea Farms, a seaweed aquaculture operation. Both companies survive today. Peter began monitoring water quality of Boyd Pond in Bristol. He was president of the Maine Volunteer Lake monitoring program and received recognition for his dedicated service for outstanding stewardship and commitment to the Protection of Maine Lakes.
Peter is predeceased by his parents, Ramsay and Elisabeth (Oma) Fischer of Mantoloking. Peter leaves his wife of 50 years, Carol Jackson of Bristol, Maine, a sister Barbara (DeAmicis) Creek and husband Dick of Mantoloking. A niece, Morgan Meyer of Toms River and her husband Jon and their boys Justin and Owen. Also a nephew, TC DeAmicis and his partner Ashlee and daughter Savanah. Peter loved his Maine family; Bruce and Lyn Jackson, John and Carolyn Jackson and sister Gail and all their children. Peter also made countless friends in every walk during his life. Last but not least Peter’s companion, Iris, their beloved golden retriever.
Peter’s smile, kind nature and enthusiasm for everything he did will be truly missed by so many.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the 1812 Farm in Bristol, Maine, on October 9th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
