Winfield J. Atno, ‘Bud’ died on September 22, 2023. He was born in Orange, NJ on October 6, 1932, and was raised in East Orange. He graduated from East Orange High School, attended Seton Hall University until his sophomore year, when he joined the U.S Air Force. He served in Korea from 1950 – 1952, where he flew F-86s, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel. When he returned home, he finished college and was awarded a Bachelor of Science and master’s degree from Seton Hall University.
He raised his family in Maplewood, NJ and spent summers in their home in Normandy Beach, NJ. He served as Coroner of Essex County in 1967. He worked at the Prudential Insurance Company, Mutual of New York, and Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company in Newark, where he was Director of Advertising. He was instrumental in The Glorious Fourth, an advertising campaign with Mutual Benefit that fostered a close friendship with Capt. Jim Lovell, Commander of Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 NASA missions. Together they traveled the United States during 1976 for America’s Bicentennial. He directed the production of the Mutual Benefit Life Open, a preliminary event to the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament from 1976 to 1982.
In his later years, he went back to East Orange High School and taught English for a few years until his retirement. He moved to Manasquan, NJ, in 1996, where he was a member of American Legion Post 196, Manasquan Elks Lodge 2534 and the Manasquan VFW, Post 1838, where he served as Chief of Staff for many years.
He was preceded in death by his brother John and his sister Mary. He is survived by his wife Andrea (née Lucibello); his children, Leslie Harvey of South Carolina (Rob), Steven of Lavallette, NJ (Kim) and Eric of California (Andrea). He was the grandfather of Amy Tilton (Mark), Brian Del Vecchio (Kait), Joanna Copeland (Tyler) and Alex Atno. He was great-grandfather to Miles Tilton, Isla DelVecchio and Arlo Del Vecchio.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on October 6, 2023 (which would have been his 91st birthday) from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, NJ.
