Jeanne L. Guempel, 94, of Point Pleasant passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Applewood Estates in Freehold. Mrs. Guempel retired in 1953 as a secretary for Public Service of New Jersey in Elizabeth. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Jeanne was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Elizabeth. She was a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church in Madison and a longtime member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Bay Head. As a member at Grace Church, she was a director of the Altar Guild and taught Sunday School. She volunteered at Morristown Memorial Hospital and was a volunteer poll worker. At All Saints, she was also Director of the Altar Guild and a member of the Women’s Guild. She helped raise money to rebuild the church after “Sandy”. She was a chairperson of the Women’s Guild at Ocean Medical Center. She organized fundraising activities for local hospitals, including the infamous Army Navy Football Game to benefit Elizabeth General Hospital. Jeanne was an avid bridge player and a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club and the Manasquan River Golf Club where she co-chaired bridge with her late husband, Robert.
Born in Perth Amboy, she grew up in Elizabeth and lived in Madison before moving to Point Pleasant in 1989.
Jeanne was predeceased by her loving husband, Robert G. Guempel in 2020; parents, James and Ellen McNamara; and sisters, Marcella Howard and Jacqueline Manfredi. Surviving are her sons, Herbert G. ‘Bert’ Guempel and his wife, Joanne of Humble, TX, Scot R. Guempel and his wife, Nancy of Madison; daughters, Linda Guempel of Clinton, Karen N. Lockburner of Brick and Sheri L. Morgan and her husband, Everett of Neptune. She also leaves 11 grandchildren, Robert (Courtney), Jennifer (Tom), Julie (Jay), Peter, David (fiancé, Stephanie), Steven (Kortney), Thomas, Rebecca, Matthew, Everett ‘Trey’, and Hunter; as well as 8 great grandchildren, Evelyn, Scotlyn, Noelle, Lillian, Jacqueline, Luca, Kamden and Reese.
Visiting will be on Tuesday 9/26 from 4-8pm at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. A funeral Mass will be offered 10am on Wednesday 9/27 at All Saints Episcopalian Church 500 Lake Drive, Bay Head. Entombment will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River. Donations may be made in her name to either All Saints Church, 500 Lake Drive, Bay Head, NJ 08742 or St. Gregory Food Pantry, 804 Bay Avenue, Point pleasant, NJ 08742.
