WALL TOWNSHIP — The Wall Township Board of Education [BOE] approved a separation agreement with high school principal Rosaleen Sirchio, who has been on administrative leave since last year, at the school board meeting Tuesday night.
During the meeting, BOE President Christine Steiz asked Business Administrator Brian Smyth to make an addition to the consent agenda.
Mr. Smyth said a “separation of service agreement” with employee number 7343 would be added to the consent agenda that evening. This was added after the board’s executive session, which is held before the public meeting.
This employee number corresponds to Ms. Sirchio’s number, according to board documents.
The Coast Star attempted to acquire a copy of the separation agreement from Business Administrator Brian Smyth on Wednesday morning, but did not receive a call back before press time.
Ms. Sirchio was placed on paid administrative leave on April 12, 2022, soon after she returned from chaperoning a school field trip to Disney World in Florida in late March. The reason for her administrative leave has not been disclosed by the board.
Interim principal Peter Righi, a retired educator, has been filling in for Ms. Sirchio while she has been in her absence.
This school district had posted a job listing for a full-time high school principal on Sept. 7. Superintendent Tracy Handerhan confirmed in an interview Tuesday that the school board is currently accepting applications and resumes.
“This position, we are looking for a permanent high school principal. We are accepting applications and we are very excited to review them and begin the interview process to find the best candidate for our students and our staff,” said Superintendent Handerhan.
According to the listing on njschoooljobs.com, the position requires a New Jersey Principal Certification, building-level administrative experience, administrative experience at the secondary level and experience with athletics/student activities.
The position would be for 12 months and come with salary and benefits pursuant to the Wall Township Administrative and Supervisory Association [WTASA] agreement. No salary has been posted.
Superintendent Handerhan said she hopes to have this position filled by fall 2024. She would prefer to hire someone soon; however, this will be dependent on the interview process.
After being asked about the posting during the first public comment section of Tuesday night’s board of education meeting, she confirmed in her report that the board had posted the opening and is accepting applications.
During the second public comment section, Wall resident Betsy Cross accused President Steitz of a “lack of transparency” and said they performed a “hand carry” in adding an item to the agenda during the meeting.
“It should have been on the agenda,” said Ms. Cross. “It’s just ridiculous that it’s not.”
