Rides at Kennywood stopped Sunday night when fire crews responded to an electrical fire.West Mifflin Fire Chief Ron Lowe said smoke was coming from a manhole. His crews determined it was an underground high-voltage electrical line under Thomas Town.Chief Lowe said the line was immediately isolated.Fortunately, he said no one was hurtThe park is currently closed for the regular season, but it was open for a private event for Highmark employees on Sunday.Highmark employee Heather Storm described seeing the fire truck rolling into the park without sirens. At that point, they were unaware of why fire crews were there.Heather Storm said once she noticed rides being shut down, she made her way to the exit.“We were in line for a ride, and they just said that the ride’s going to be stopped for a little bit. ‘You can stick around and wait if you want, or you can leave.’ So, we got out of that line and went to another ride, and then they shut that one down,” Storm said. “At the time, we didn’t smell smoke or see anything, really, just the fire trucks coming in, and so, everybody just kind of started leaving the park because none of the rides were open, and it just seemed like a good time to leave.”Storm said as they were leaving the park, each guest was given a complimentary ticket to return to Kennywood for Phantom Fall Fest. Kennywood is still set to reopen for Phantom Fall Fest on Friday, Sept. 22.
