RADNOR – A new private golf club is a step closer to opening in Radnor after the commissioners approved the transfer of a liquor license from Broomall to Wayne this week.
During a commissioners meeting this week, Ed McHugh, attorney for Intown Golf, told the commissioners, “We’re hoping to bring a license in from Broomall – from Marple Township into Radnor Township. The folks at Intown Golf have entered into an agreement of sale to purchase a license and hopefully bring it into Radnor Township.”
According to McHugh, they are required to get a resolution in support of the transfer from Radnor Township before going to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. The state’s LCB then has the final say in approving the transfer.
Intown Golf describes itself on its website as “a members-only social club for golfers.”
They further describe the club as a modern-day version of the Links Club or a golf-themed version of Soho House. It will be at 201 King of Prussia Road.
McHugh said the facility would be similar to its operations in other cities around the country and would offer upscale food and beverage.
“The menu of which will be designed by one of the best restaurant tours in the southern region,” McHugh said.
The beverage would include cocktails, draft and bottled beers, and a wide selection of wines. The site is a little over 15,000 square feet, with an anticipated seating capacity of about 146 seats.
There would initially be about 350 private members. They’d take reservations and attempt to take walk-in members as well, McHugh said.
George Behn, with Intown Golf Club, later explained that the private membership was anticipated to be 350 at the opening but now is anticipated to be about 400 and could grow from that number. Their Atlanta facility is at about 660.
Because Radnor is in a colder region than Atlanta, Behn indicated they’d expect more use of their indoor facilities in the winter and, therefore, would have fewer members than what they have in Atlanta.
“We actually believe that in Pennsylvania or for Radnor, we will likely have less than 660 members because of the heavy volume use during the winter. For us, we want to always be within capacity. We want to provide a high level of service, and we don’t want to impede the surrounding area,” he said.
Behn said they would have a total of about 50 employees, with about 25 working at a time for larger events.
McHugh said there were four liquor licenses available in Radnor when the agreements for Intown to come to Radnor, but by the time they attempted to buy one, none were available for sale.
“So in order to get this license, we needed to go outside the township for a license and bring it in,” McHugh said.
Behn said the membership fee for a full family membership is around $10,000, with monthly fees of about $400.
“Unlike other clubs, we do not require food and beverage minimums on top of that,” Behn said. “We design our clubs to be a create-your-own-journy, so however you want to use it in your normal path of life, we want it to be convenient for you and your family and friends.”
At the end of the hearing, Behn said their goal is to open in about one year.
