As escaped murder Danelo Cavalcante stays on the run in southeast Pennsylvania, his mother back in Brazil spoke with The New York Times about her son.
In the interview, her first since her son’s escape from Chester County Prison, Iracema Cavalcante talked about her son’s upbringing, which she described as a rough one overcoming hardships.
“His training was his suffering,” she told The New York Times. “It was going to sleep hungry. It was waking up as I wondered what to feed them.”
But perhaps the most revealing part of the interview was what she had to say about the crime for which he was sentenced to life in prison: the brutal murder of his estranged girlfriend Deborah Brandao in April 2021.
Cavalcante stabbed her 37 times outside her home in front of her two children, a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy. Testimony during Cavalcante’s murder trial revealed the daughter ran to a neighbor’s apartment, where she screamed, “Help me! Help me! Help me! He’s going to kill my mommy!”
While Iracema Cavalcante in the interview acknowledged that her son “should pay for his mistake,” she essentially offered a defense of him despite the ghastly crime.
“Did it happen? It happened,” Iracema Cavalcante said in the interview. “But it happened because of the stranglehold (Brandao) put on him, the stance she took with him.”
She added, “It wasn’t femicide. He had to. He had no other choice,” The New York Times reported.
Iracema Cavalcante even went on to suggest her son might be better dying than being caught and returning to prison for the rest of his life, saying, “If it’s to go to a place to suffer and die in that place, it’s better to die soon.”
Her remarks were a strong contrast from just last week, when she recorded a message in Portuguese that was blared from police cars and helicopters in the area where Danelo was believed to be at the time, begging her son to surrender.
