Joseph Eckart, September 9, Neptune City
A giant in love, generosity and strength, Joseph Eckart, 89, couldn’t live forever but damned if he didn’t try. Born in 1933 and raised during the Great Depression in Bradley Beach, Joe Eckart adored his family life with an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. Joe was a stranger to no one and found great purpose sharing in the successes, joys, and challenges of those around him. He was authentically and wholeheartedly there for those in his life.
A proud US Marine in the mid 1950’s, Joe continued his education at Monmouth College with a degree in Science and Math. He taught for over 30 years at Middletown North and South and coached the South high school tennis team to the conference championships in 1982. A believer in living a full life, he didn’t sit still after retiring from education, instead he quickly got back to work as ‘Joe the Housepainter.’
He enjoyed fishing and was an avid NY Times crossword puzzler. He loved to “beat” the contestants on Jeopardy and his Bingo scratch offs. He spent hours sitting on his front porch watching thunderstorms and yelling at the cars driving too fast down our small town road. “Slow Down!” was a favorite holler from the front steps. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3-5, he made his seat at Barry’s his second home. He loved Seinfeld and John Prine.
Joe was honorable, loyal, and brave. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all of his life experiences. He believed that anything could be fixed or built with a good attitude and a roll of duct tape.
Joe was predeceased by his son, Joseph Jr. and leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Georgie, his daughter, Amy and her boyfriend and his two loving grandkids, Adalie and Scottie.
Joe Eckart believed in his family, friends and living life to the fullest every day. He saw the best in everyone and always made them feel welcomed and special. If you were lucky to know Joe, you were lucky enough.
