Rev. Raymond D. DuBois, 81, of Spring Lake passed away on August 25, 2023. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1942, the son of E. Richard and Vivian DuBois. He grew up in Glen Rock, NJ and moved to Spring Lake fifty years ago.
He graduated from Susquehanna University with a degree in economics and from Drew Theological School with a Masters of Divinity. Ray devoted his life to helping others. His strong faith saw the good in others. He cared about them and accomplished a great deal on their behalf.
For thirty-three years he served as the chaplain at the Garden State Correctional Facility. At the facility he organized Project Woodshed which taught inmates carpentry skills that they could use to make a living when released from prison. Inmates involved in the program made furniture which was sold and the money earned was deposited in their bank accounts which could be used when they were released. He also established CRYUP, Christ Reaching Youth Using Prisoners. In this program, youth visited Garden State Prison and learned first hand the mistakes the inmates had made and how that led to prison time.
For many years he worked with seminary students from Princeton Theological School and New Brunswick Theological Seminary giving them first hand experience as prison chaplains. Several of his students became prison chaplains at a number of New Jersey’s prisons.
Ray also worked as chaplain at the Carrier Clinic in Belle Meade counseling recovering addicts. He was an adjunct professor at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary where he taught courses which focused on crime and punishment in the prison setting.
Ray also worked with the community of Spring Lake as coordinator of the Spring Lake Drug Prevention Alliance. In 2007, he was honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution with its community service award.
He was the Minister of Visitation for the Manasquan United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Men and the prison ministry team of the church.
Ray had enormous respect for the men and women of our country who have served in the military. He counseled combat veterans who suffer from PTSD.
Ray enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and camping with his family. He is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bonnie, two sons Matthew of Howell, and Jason of Spring Lake. two daughters-in -law Carrie and Manling, a grandson Jackson, his brother David of Stuart, Florida, and 4 nieces, and 3 nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at the Manasquan United Methodist Church, located at the corner of South and Church Streets in Manasquan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ray’s memory to the Manasquan United Methodist Church, 23 Church Street, Manasquan, NJ or to an organization that helps veterans.
