With just 4 days remaining in the month of August, the return of pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks, and kids back in school, I can hear the faint voice of fall whispering my name even with Charleston’s infamous heat and humidity still scream-singing Cruel Summer in my face. Is it just me, or are you also ready to put your favorite oversized cardigan on again too? Although, before I wish this muggy, buggy, southern summer farewell, I do want to share my favorite things of the season.
The past few months have been filled with good finds, good times, good books, and surprisingly, good habits.
In no particular order…..
Olive & June’s Quick Dry Nail Polish
Say hello to your new favorite polish! It not only dries fast, but it has some major staying power! I’ve been getting up to 7 days of wear with no chipping! And I really love this blush-pink shade that is neutral enough to work for all seasons.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Watch Parties
It’s no secret that I devoured The Summer I Turned Pretty book series years ago when my daughter turned me on to young adult author, Jenny Han. So last summer, I was thrilled when season one of the television series launched. All of season 1 was released on launch day, so my girl and I binged every episode in one very late/early morning viewing. But this summer, they opted to release each episode of season 2 weekly. How very old school of them. ? So every Thursday night for 8 weeks we had us a little watch party.
We popped popcorn and had a variety of mostly sugary snacks. And we made watching each episode feel like a special event. This summer I even got my boy into it too! Which made the show and our viewing parties all the more special. And as much as I loved watching this series with my kids, my big takeaway is that making small things feel big brings in a special kind of magic. Turning something as simple as watching a television show into a weekly event made the whole thing feel so much more special. And I noticed via TikTok that we weren’t the only ones doing this weekly watch party thing, and I really do hope this trend is here to stay! It’s such a special way to celebrate everyday moments.
My son got so into this series that I had to buy him the books before he went back to college. ?
Reading Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Backlist
Speaking of books, I read and absolutely LOVED Daisy Jones & The Six, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Malibu Rising & Carrie Soto Is Back.
But TJR has been writing books long before Bookstagram made her a household name. Yet somehow I’d never read any of her backlist. That is until this summer!
It was a TJR summer for me, and I have zero regrets. All four of these books were great, but After I Do was my favorite. These are my favorite kind of beach reads! They’re stories that suck you in right from the start with characters that you enjoy getting to know and endings that make you reflect on your own life/loves/choices.
I’m a little sad now that I’ve read everything TJR has written. But I’ll be anxiously awaiting her next release!
Versed Smooth Landing Advanced Retinoid Eye Balm
I’ve been using this eye balm nightly for the past few months, and I feel like my 44-year-old eyes are thankful for it. It glides on similar to Vaseline but is not as thick. I know my description is hardly doing this product justice. But trust me, it feels so great on, and even though it’s formulated with a retinoid it’s very gentle and causes zero irritation. And the bonus is the affordable price point!
The #onesmallthingforyourhome Weekly Challenge
Last but not least, no one is more surprised than I am that I’ve stuck with this self-imposed weekly Instagram challenge for 13 weeks already! I mean, it’s easily the healthiest habit in my life right now, besides making my bed every day. ? There’s just something about doing one small thing for your home just once a week that feels very doable. I think if it was a daily challenge I’d fail miserably, but doing it weekly allows me to be really intentional about what little project I want to tackle. And my home is definitely better for it! So many of the little things on my house to-do list that were always getting pushed to the back burner, like organizing kitchen drawers and refreshing our outdoor teak dining table, are finally getting done! I’m realizing that little things make such a huge difference and one weekly win is so rewarding and very motivating! And that’s why I’ve included this challenge on my favorite things of the summer list.
If you want to join me in this weekly #onesmallthingforyourhome challenge, tag me @ourfifthhouse on Instagram so I can cheer you on!
