Head coach Deanna Golden had a winning debut at Archbishop Carroll Friday as the Patriots downed Souderton, 3-0, in a season-opening, nonleague field hockey match.Laura Wineburg scored twice and Peyton Nord also scored for Carroll. Beth Wineburg, Sam Hewitt and Sienna Golden had the assists.
Carroll goalie Fiona Conboy made three saves.
Springfield 7, Interboro 0 >> Jacklyn Guille and Kylie Adolph had two goals each for the Cougars. Macy Gougler, Riley Birkmire and Coral Strunk also scored.Charlize Garret and Sara Campbell combined for the shutout in goal.
Interboro goalie Sydney Ewing made 15 saves.
Ridley 4, Henderson 0 >> Allie Decker scored twice and Lindsay Maurone and Alexa Bair had a goal each as the Green Raiders won their opener.
Hannah DiFilippo had two assists and Ridley’s Elise Martin made six saves.
Haverford 1, Bishop Shanahan 0 >> Junior Alice Cleary scored the lone goal of the game with a minute remaining in the second quarter. It held up for a Fords win.
Volleyball
Sun Valley won a classic, five-set match with always competitive Central League foe Strath Haven, 3-2. Jenna Jones posted a triple double of 21 assists, 16 kills and 19 digs as the Vanguards took a 19-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-23 and 17-15 victory.
Libero Olivia Hoy had 26 digs and Shannon McGroarty added 15 kills and 13 digs. For Strath Haven, Jillian Surkis and Lauren McGinn had 17 kills each. Lauren McGinn also set for 19 assists and had four aces. Sophomore Stephanie Moyer ended with 20 assists and junior Aislin O’Neill posted 30 digs.
Boys Soccer
GV’s Zach Northey scored off a penalty kick for the Jaguars’ lone goal in the 76th minute as they fell 2-1 to the Warriors.
DELCO CHRISTIAN 4, SPRINGFIELD 2 >> The Knights received goals by Cortez Cardone, Judah Cooper, Griffin Schmitt (off a Cordone assist) and Justin Ma en route to the nonleague opening win over the Cougars.
Girls Soccer
Ava Annacone scored from 68 feet out for the game’s only goal, giving Strath Haven a 1-0 win over Wissahickon in the opener for both teams Friday.
GARNET VALLEY 2, UNIONVILLE 0 >> Maddie Smith set up Maura Mellides for the game’s first goal, then Smith turned around and scored the second off an assist from Liv Perry.
Reese Regula made two saves to notch her first varsity win in a shutout.
