It is with much sadness and great love that the family of Ellen Ehrman, 91, shares news of her passing. Known for her keen mind, varied interests, and commitment to family, Ellen was a world traveler who sought exciting experiences throughout her lifetime.
Ellen’s journey began in the depths of the Depression. She was the ultimate Valentine’s Day present, arriving via stork to loving parents Ward and Doris (Kemp) Ringer. As a cherished only child, Ellen excelled in academics (math), art (painting), and music (piano). Her acceptance into The College of William and Mary in Virginia reflected her hard work and talents, but her loyalty to family returned her home to Carlstadt, NJ to care for her mother following her father’s death. She pursued a career in nearby New York City, rising to Executive Secretary to the President for a major, global insurance company before the age of 25. Ellen’s subsequent marriage to Chester ‘Chet’ Ehrman carried her away from the area and into a life of homemaking and adventure.
Returning to NJ a decade later, Ellen and Chet settled in Basking Ridge for 48 years and “baby made three.” Professionally, Ellen became known for her work on the town’s Shade Tree Commission and in the Bonafide ladies’ charity society. Residents of Basking Ridge still benefit from her thoughtful greenscape planning, a result of her landscape architect degree. Ellen ventured also into entrepreneurship, running the family’s Lorelei Nautical Products and Properties businesses.
Ellen’s greatest adventures were in her intellectual pursuits (particularly Egyptian history), travel (Europe, Japan, the Virgin Islands, and Egypt), and on Lorelei, the family’s liveaboard sport fishing boat. From their summer port in Point Pleasant, Ellen hosted guests on trips “down the bay,” “offshore,” and for “back deck cocktail parties.” Later, she and Chet moved across the bay where they could still enjoy close friendships with their Johnson Bros. Dock People. They maintained the Bay Head home for 29 years, acquiring also homes in St. Joseph, MI, and Naples, FL.
No matter where her talents engaged her, Ellen was rooted in her family homelife. Ellen is survived by her only child, Lori Ehrman Tinkey; her son-in-law Brett Tinkey; grandchildren Amanda Tinkey, Madeleine (Chris) Cash, Brielle Tinkey, and Luke Tinkey; and great-grandson Raynon Cash. All friends and family of the Ehrmans are welcome to attend a memorial service for Ellen and Chet at All Saints Episcopal Church in Bay Head at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023 with reception to follow nearby.
Arrangements were entrusted to Heritage Chapel & Cremation Services, 8747 US 31, Berrien Springs, MI. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at http://www.heritage-chapel.com.
