A piece of history was nearly tossed aside by the Mets’ Pete Alonso on Friday night in St. Louis.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Cardinals rookie Masyn Winn chopped a pitch down the third-base line and beat the throw from Jonathan Arauz to Alonso. Winn, the Cardinals’ top prospect, had collected his first hit in his first professional game.
Only problem, Alonso, who dove to field the throw, unknowingly tossed the ball into the crowd at Busch Stadium. It is customary for the first hit to be preserved. The ball was eventually turned over to security.
The Mets first baseman drew the ire of Cardinals fans when he stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh inning. The Mets went on to notch a 7-1 victory over the Cardinals. It was the Mets’ third straight win as they improved to 57-66. Brandon Nimmo set the tone with three hits, including his 18th home run, a new career high. Jeff McNeil added a three-run home run as part of a five-run seventh.
Joey Lucchesi tossed 5.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, four hits and two walks allowed in his first major league start since May 13.
