In Loving Memory of James Muller
James (‘Jim’) Muller, the only child of Henry Muller and Cecilia Muller, was born on January 10, 1936, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He spent his early years in Jersey City before moving to North Arlington, where he attended Queen of Peace Grammar School, where he began developing the principled, spiritual, and patriotic foundation that would shape his life and touch so many others.
Jim’s parents, Henry and Cecilia Muller, were a source of unconditional love and support throughout his life. They nurtured his growth and encouraged his academic and personal pursuits. Their guidance and values instilled in Jim an unwavering moral compass and commitment to family.
Jim attended Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City. Upon graduating from The Prep, he pursued higher education at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. Jim embraced Stevens’ focus on engineering and technology. His curiosity in mechanical engineering, quiet determination, and uncanny ability to fix almost any device from cars to appliances was legendary, inspiring endless weekend projects.
As he grew older, Jim ventured into the world, starting his family and raising children in Kearny and the serene shores of Normandy Beach. Homes on Clinton and then Livingston Avenues in Kearny, New Jersey, became special places where he and his beloved wife, Carol, created a lovely home for their family. Normandy Beach held a special place in their hearts as a canvas for a lifetime of magnificent memories. Through it all, the clan made time for dinner with Nanny and Pop Pop at the family home on Melrose Avenue every Sunday night.
Jim’s love for Normandy Beach remained strong, and upon retirement, he and Carol returned to their idyllic beachside community, where they had spent so many cherished moments with family and friends.
Later in life, Jim and Carol wintered in Naples, Florida. Their time there was filled with warmth, not only from the sunny weather, but also from the love and camaraderie they shared with dear friends and family who also sought winter refuge on the Gulf.
Jim was a dedicated parishioner of Queen of Peace in North Arlington and Saint Padre Pio Church in Lavallette, New Jersey. Participation in the church brought him immense joy and spiritual fulfillment. He found and drew strength from the teachings and guidance of his faith.
Together with Carol, his beloved wife of 65 years, Jim raised a beautiful family. Each of his children embraced their own unique paths in life with the love and support of their parents. Let us remember and celebrate the names of their beloved children and their spouses: Cheryl and her husband Danny Sullivan; Jim and his wife Muffin Muller; Nancy and her husband Kieran Cantlon (deceased); John and his wife Tricia Muller & Susan and her husband Bob Cranley.
Jim and Carol’s grandchildren brought immeasurable joy to their lives, and Jim cherished the distinct bond he shared with each grandchild: Jimmy, Gus, Billy, Betsy, and Cecilia – children of Jim and Muffin; Ryan, Sean, Evan, and Emma – children of Nancy and Kieran; John, Reilly, Brian, Brigette, and Genevieve – children of John and Tricia; Cameron, Bevin, and Declan – children of Susan and Bobby. Jim, AKA Gubbie, was always off to the Normandy Beach Post office with cards for birthdays, confirmations, and all of life’s moments for his 17 grandchildren.
Throughout his life, Jim embraced the love and unity that his family built. He treasured the joyous moments spent with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. His unwavering commitment to family and faith created a legacy of love and support that will forever be cherished.
Professionally, Jim found fulfillment initially at Westinghouse Elevator, where he enjoyed working on the skyscrapers under construction transforming the Manhattan skyline. Later, he joined the ranks of RCA Global Communications, a renowned telecommunications company. Here, he played an instrumental role in the advancement of global communications, contributing to the connectivity that brought people from New York, Tokyo, Guam, and all corners of the world closer together. His journey of professional excellence continued as he became part of the team at MCI Communications, a trailblazing company in the telecommunications industry. At MCI, Jim continued to make a significant impact, helping to shape electronic communications networks across the Globe. Throughout his career, Jim demonstrated not only technical prowess, but also exceptional leadership and a dedication to collaboration. His colleagues respected and admired him for his work ethic, integrity, and ability to bring out the best in others.
As we gather to celebrate the life of Jim Muller, let us remember the love and devotion he shared with his family, the wisdom he carried from his parents, the education he embraced, and the faith that anchored him. May his memory forever inspire us to cherish our families, embrace our values, and live lives of purpose and love.
