Joseph Michael Clerkin, 89 of Wall Twp. passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Joseph was born in Queens, NY. He and his late wife had resided in Bergenfield, NJ for 31 years, before retiring to Wall in 2000. Joseph was a proud veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean War. He was employed as a mechanic for Con Edison, NY, for many years before retiring in 1998. He was a devout member of the Catholic faith and a longtime parishioner of St. Rose Church, Belmar. He was an honorary lifetime member of the St. John’s Council #1345 of the Knights of Columbus, Dumont, NJ.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Margaret (née Herrick) Clerkin and his devoted wife of 61 years Eileen E. (née Yarrow) Clerkin on April 15, 2019; his brother, Thomas Clerkin; his sister, Alice Clerkin.
Surviving are his seven children, Michael Clerkin and his wife Susan, Naples, FL, Eileen Rutz and her husband Thomas, Neptune, James Clerkin and his wife Debbie, Bridgewater, Rita Clerkin, Belmar, Ann Marie Fowler, Sarasota, FL, Donna Clerkin, Portsmouth, VA. and Jessica Willms and her husband Kory, Brick. Joseph will be greatly missed by his twelve grandchildren, Colleen Rutz, Brian Rutz and his wife Amber, Taylor Petillo, Matthew Clerkin, Travis Petillo, Lacaubeneir Bryant, Megan Fowler, Rachel Clerkin, Joey Fowler, Shannon Clerkin, and Caitlin Clerkin, and his six great grandchildren, Calvin, Asa, Benjamin and David Rutz, Konnor and Jordyn Willms.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2023, from 1-5 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday, August 7th, at 10:00 am at St. Rose Church, 603 7th Ave., Belmar. Burial at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle NJ Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Rd., Wrightstown.
