A chocolate Lab mix in Warren County is getting spoiled after his owners were presented Tuesday with $2,000, part of a reward authorities had offered for information leading to the apprehension of jail escapee Michael Burham.
Ron and Cindy Ecklund were given $2,000 cash from Warren County Crime Stoppers for the role they and their dog Tucker had in Burham’s Saturday arrest, according to the Times Observer in Warren.
Tucker attended a press conference at his house with a new tennis ball. He also got a new collar, toys and a ribeye steak, Erie News Now reported.
The Ecklunds followed the sound of Tucker’s barks near a creek on their property Saturday and came face-to-face with Burham, 34, who escaped the Warren County Prison on July 6, they told various news outlets. The escape set off a massive manhunt in the rural county in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Three agencies offered a combined total of $22,000 in rewards for his capture. The couple told reporters they expect to receive the rest of the reward.
“For some reason, (Tucker) just got up and took off running, how did he know someone’s 300 yards away that shouldn’t be there?” Ron Ecklund told JET 24 Action News. “There’s been people down there before and he’s never done that but for some reason this time, he knew, he took off.”
The Ecklunds called 911 and reported finding the suspect who had been held at the jail on kidnapping charges before the escape. He is also suspected in a rape and fatal shooting in New York, according to the Erie Times-News.
Burham is being held without bail at the Erie County Prison. As Warren County Crime Stoppers President Gary Barnes exchanged the cash with Ron Ecklund during the press conference, Tucker came over and looked up at the $100 bills and wagged his tail.
