Irene Joan Gately Fitzpatrick, of Neptune City passed away peacefully at home, July 18th, with her loving family by her side. Irene was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in Avon-By-The- Sea. She attended Saint Rose High School, Belmar and Georgian Court University, Lakewood, NJ.
Irene was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Grace (nee Kelly) Gately, and brother Paul Gately. She is survived by her dear sister Patricia Gately, her daughter Kelly and her husband Brian McNamara, her daughter Kerry Fitzpatrick Beer, and her sister-in law Mary Ann Gately. Irene was blessed with many loving grandchildren: Madeline, Ian, Caroline, Lily, Emily and her husband Nathan, Grace, Luke, Michael, and Bridget, all of whom she adored. Irene had many dear friends but especially Katherine Raab, who she always considered family.
Irene was a devoted teacher at the Wilson School in Neptune City for many years. She worked tirelessly to support all her students reach their fullest potential and was regularly seen after school tutoring and helping so many with homework and assignments. After retirement, Irene enjoyed working in retail at Macy’s in Eatontown, Nadine’s in Point Pleasant and then Little Charmers, in Brielle.
Irene loved to host wonderful parties for holiday or “just because” and was welcoming and generous to all. She was a talented and avid gardener, with gorgeous flower beds surrounding her lovely home. She was a talented seamstress who made beautiful home decor as well as clothing for her daughters. Irene was a dedicated supporter of Catholic Education and was on the Board of Education at St. Rose School. She was a member of St Elizabeth’s Parish for 76 years. She was an avid fundraiser and served on the first parish council of Saint Elizabeth’s Church in Avon. She was active for many years in the Georgian Court Alumnae Association.
A Funeral Mass will be held August 9, 2023 at 11 am at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 424 Lincoln Avenue Avon-By-The Sea. Interment to follow at Saint Catharine’s Cemetery, 1100 W Chicago Blvd, Sea Girt.
