- The city of Newark welcomed nine new firefighters Wednesday but a pall hung over the graduation ceremony. Referring to the recent deaths of two city firefighters when responding to a fire in a cargo ship at Port Newark, Mayor Ras Baraka said they were “still fresh in our hearts and minds. Although the deaths of Captain Acabou and Captain Brooks Jr., and we still — the city is still mourning. The families are still mourning and trying to figure that out.”
Mallory Grossman’s parents reach $9.1M settlement with NJ school district in bullying case

- The Rockaway Township School District in Morris County has agreed to pay $9.1 million to the parents of Mallory Grossman, the 12-year-old whose death by suicide in 2017 sparked a national debate about bullying and prompted new legislation in New Jersey. The settlement, announced Wednesday, marks the largest-ever payout in a bullying case in the state, according to Bruce Nagel of Nagel Rice in Roseland, who represented the family.

Verizon resolves problem with calls to NJ police departments

- Verizon appears to have resolved problems connecting calls made from cell phones to police departments and business landlines in New Jersey and around the country. Calls made to other Verizon personal lines appeared to be going through. However, calls that New Jersey 101.5 randomly made to the main line for the Toms River and Bradley Beach police departments connected but were cut off by an “all circuits are busy” message.
