WORCESTER — In a return to an annual, pre-COVID tradition, Variety — the Children’s Charity of the Delaware Valley hosted a Red, White, Blue & YOU prom night for young adults with disabilities.
Variety’s prom, sponsored by ACME Markets, provided high school-aged campers and summer vocational participants with an opportunity to experience prom in an environment conscious of sensory needs; an experience the children might not otherwise receive.
Over 50 of Variety’s high school-aged campers dressed in their best — with corsages and boutonnieres arranged and donated by ACME — and were treated to hors d’oeuvres and a sit-down dinner catered by ACME, followed by an evening of dance in Variety’s Recreational Hall. To culminate the evening, Prom King and Queen and Prince and Princess were chosen and donned crowns.
“Variety is grateful to long-time corporate supporter ACME and its hardworking employee volunteers who create this memorable, gorgeous event for our high school students. It is a unique event that Variety campers talk about for many years” stated Dominique Bernardo, CEO of Variety.
“ACME was thrilled to return and host the Variety prom in-person after its three-year hiatus. It’s always great to see the smiling faces of the campers, counselors and staff. On prom night it’s hard to tell who is having more fun, the campers or the volunteers.” stated Dana Ward, senior public affairs manager.
All food, decorations, photography, and floral arrangements were provided by ACME, free of charge, and Evans Entertainment donated DJ services for the evening.
Variety’s mission is to enrich the lives of children and young adults with disabilities through social, educational and vocational programs that nurture independence and self-confidence, and prepare them for life. Each year, hundreds of families eagerly await coming “home” to Variety for a summer full of rich relationships and engaging activities. Variety summer camps include day camp, overnight camp, extended school year (ESY) and vocational camp.
In addition, Variety’s year-round workforce development model VarietyWorks is making a difference in the lives of young adults who are receiving valuable job training and independent job placement.
