South Side business owners are calling for action from city leaders following a deadly shooting early Sunday morning. A long-time bar on Pittsburgh’s South Side has chosen to shut its doors temporarily for the first time in 17 years.Brian Vetere, co-owner of Carson City Saloon said this move comes to protect their staff and customers.“After this past weekend, there was three shootings, and on Sunday morning we just decided, because of the safety of our staff and our clientele we need to close,” Vetere said.Watch the original report from this weekend’s shooting in the video above.Carson City Saloon hopes to reopen in mid-August for football season.Vetere said he fears for the safety of his staff and patrons when they leave the bar.Surveillance footage from businesses along East Carson Street captured the sound of gunfire early Sunday morning and the chaos that follows.Pittsburgh Police said 7 rounds were fired in the 1300 block of Sarah Street hitting one man in the shoulder. He was rushed to the hospital but didn’t survive.“The guy who got killed is a coach in basketball, helps kids out, and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” owner of Cupka’s, Rich Cupka said.Cupka also serves on the South Side Chamber of Commerce Board. He said despite numerous meetings between business owners and city leaders and various attempts at stopping violence on East Carson Street, more has to be done.“Most people like to have meetings, they still want to have more meetings, but meetings should be over. We need action from the city,” Cupka said. “The violence is out of control. We need help from the state police, county, sheriffs, and the city of Pittsburgh has to do something.”“I don’t blame the police how are they supposed to do their job? When there are drug deals happening on this corner, there’s a shooting that happens on this corner, there’s underage kids just roaming the streets, smoking dope, and drinking alcohol out in the open, and what are the police supposed to do?” Vetere said.Vetere suggested a curfew.“If they would implement a curfew in the southside that at a certain time maybe 11 o’clock, maybe 12 o’clock, if you’re under the age of 21 you have to go home. You got into the South Side somehow. You have to go home, and it doesn’t take somebody off the streets, you just have to leave,” Vetere said.Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reached out to Pittsburgh Public Safety and the Mayor’s Office.
