Sheetz is heading West.
The Altoona-based convenience store and gas station chain is slated to open its first store in Michigan — Romulus to be exact — in late 2024.
“While it is too early in the development process to provide a timeline or location for any additional stores, our goal is to offer Michigan residents the ultimate one-stop shop to fuel their bodies and their vehicles,” Brian Dinges, assistant vice president of real estate with Sheetz, told the Detroit Free Press in an email Wednesday.
The latest update moves the timeline for the new Sheetz store even sooner than previously reported. In November, Sheetz said it was eyeing a 2025 opening date.
The store will be at 33380 Wick Road, officials said. That site is about four miles from Detroit Metro Airport.
“With respect to site criteria, Sheetz looks at many variables including size, traffic, access, demos as well as other metrics,” Dinges told the Free Press. “We find that we can best serve our customers on approximately two acres. However, our model allows us to flex the size of our site to accommodate lots as small as 1.5 acres.”
Even as Sheetz heads West, it’s continuing to eye new store locations in Western Pennsylvania — the latest along Pittsburgh Street in Greensburg.
Founded in 1952, the company operates gas stations and convenience stores across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina. It has more than 660 locations nationwide and nearly 300 in Pennsylvania.
