Sheldon Douglas ‘Doug’ Steacy of Hockessin, DE, formerly of Brielle, NJ, passed peacefully into eternal rest with his family surrounding him on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. He was 93 years old.
Doug grew up in Hamden, CT. He attended nearby Cheshire Academy and after graduating in 1948, Doug signed up for a 3-year enlistment with the Air Force. At Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Doug worked as an ‘Intricate Equipment Specialist,’ aka a typewriter repairman. About one year into the Korean War, Doug was shipped overseas. With the country at war, Doug’s enlistment period was extended another year. As a typewriter repairman, Doug was in the combat zone but off the front line. After separating from the Air Force, he attended Boston University from 1952 through 1956. He met Sandy, his wife of 66 years, at BU. Doug and Sandy married on New Year’s Eve, 1955, and started their family two years later.
Early in his career, Doug held human resources and administrative positions for defense industry companies. In 1963, Mitre Corporation transferred him from Bedford, Massachusetts, to McLean, VA, to help open its second office. Doug and his family moved to Brielle, NJ, in 1971. Doug was hired by Insco Systems Corp. in Neptune, Continental Insurance Company’s new data processing center. Doug’s final move was to Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in 1977, where he was a systems analyst until 1989. He and Sandy retired to Hockessin, DE in 1993.
Doug loved all things golf. While living in NJ, Doug regularly played the Monmouth County courses. He played historic Old Course at St. Andrews twice. A few months after moving to Hockessin, Doug shot a hole-in-one at Delcastle’s 9th hole. Doug served as a Marshall for the Delaware LPGA for 10 years,
Doug and Sandy enjoyed hiking and exploring and had the great fortune of traveling to numerous countries during retirement.
Doug was pre-deceased by Sandy on November 6, 2022. They would have been married 67 years on New Year’s Eve. Doug was also pre-deceased by his parents William Steacy and Lillian Hooper Steacy. He is survived by his son James and wife Seher and grandson Yasin of Sayreville, NJ; his son Elliot of Neptune, NJ; his daughter Lynn and husband Daryl of Brielle, NJ and grandchildren Lauren of Medford, MA, Jenna of Sante Fe, NM and Brad of Spring Lake, NJ. Doug is also survived by his brother-in-law, William T. Veal, Jr. and wife Karen of Oxnard, CA, and nieces Laird Desmond and Lee Corso and their families.
