A luxurious $11 million contemporary mansion in Cedar Grove that is under contract by a buyer has the area buzzing with speculation that the new owner could be a celebrity like New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers or someone in the music industry.
The new construction, modern glass house has stunning views of New York City and is located on the Montclair-Cedar Grove border near the Mills Reserve, a wooded county park that sits on top of the First Watchung Mountain, and the Upper Montclair downtown area.

This very private, 10,000-square-foot architectural home has a sleek design, with walls of windows that let in plenty of sunlight, an open floor plan that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living spaces, and a gourmet kitchen with high-end appliances, custom cabinetry and a large center island with bar seating. The rear of the home is almost entirely made up of glass.
The home was listed and sold by Stanton Company Realtors in Montclair. Rich Stanton, the broker and owner of the agency, says he doesn’t know who the buyer is as the home was purchased through an LLC.

Local gossip started mounting about the identity of the buyer once area residents found out the glamorous home was under contract. The rumor mill has speculated that 39-year-old Rodgers, a recent East Coast transplant who was traded to the Jets in April from the Green Bay Packers, could be the buyer. The team’s practice facility is in nearby Florham Park.
The house was previously owned by Matsumi Kaneda, who owned the popular Japanese restaurant Daikichi in Montclair, along with her husband Aki Kaneda. Their son, Benji Kaneda, recently took over the establishment, which has been open since 1988.

The 8-bedroom, 9-bathroom home was built in 2022 and also has a luxurious primary suite with an open-plan, spa-like en-suite bathroom (the large glass shower stall has two entrances) and a walk-in dressing room, as well as a home office, media room, gym, in-law suite, wine cellar, a whole house generator and a 3-car garage.
Additional bedrooms are generously sized and have en suite bathrooms and custom closets. The house sits on 2.39 acres of land atop the mountain.

Carol Apprendi, a realtor with Brown Harris Stevens real estate office in Montclair, toured the home.
“The house is beautiful, and very unusual for the area because it’s so modern. It’s a great home for entertaining and the views of the city are breathtaking,” she says.
