Former President Donald Trump has been indicted for a second time. On June 8, 2023, the businessman and 2024 presidential candidate was indicted on seven counts in a special counsel classified documents probe — marking the first time a former president has faced federal charges. His attorney confirmed the onetime reality TV star is facing a charge under the Espionage Act on top of charges of obstruction of justice, destruction or falsification of records, conspiracy and false statements all related to a months-long investigation into his alleged improper retention and illegal handling of classified documents that he took to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. He’s due in court in Miami on June 13.
The indictment comes less than two months after Trump was indicted in connection with an alleged hush money payments scheme involving adult film star Stormy Daniels that allegedly went down before the 2016 presidential election. The ex-POTUS — the first former president to face criminal charges — has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records and conspiracy in that case.

“Scrolling TV today something jump right out, one is The Donald, waving what is supposedly secret documents and even admitting that they weren’t declassified. I don’t know if it was bluster or not. All I know is that cannot help him. I’m gonna share some advice from the greatest legal minds of our generation, of my lifetime… the one thing they all told me and stressed to me is do not talk about the case publicly. Do not do interviews about the case. I don’t know if Donald’s lawyers are stressing this to him. If they’re not, he should fire them and sue them.” —O.J. Simpson

“The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society. We have for years witnessed an uneven application of the law depending upon political affiliation. Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary or Hunter? The DeSantis administration will bring accountability to the DOJ, excise political bias and end weaponization once and for all.” —Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who’s challenging Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in the 2023 presidential race

“This election will be a referendum on Trump’s guilt or innocence,” Meghan McCain wrote in part in her lengthy June 9, 2023, DailyMail.com column about Donald Trump’s indictment. “If this reported seven count federal indictment against Trump does not reveal a crime so shocking that it unites Americans in universal condemnation of him, then I fear there may be no coming back.”
Meghan also wrote, “undoubtedly, the ex-president has behaved atrociously. We know that he was storing sensitive documents in his home — he shouldn’t have. He lamely attempted to explain away the issue by claiming that he can declassify documents with the wave of his hand — he can’t. His lawyer misled federal authorities, who came looking to recover the information — they shouldn’t have lied. But if that is the extent of the wrongdoing then the Justice Department will have recklessly swerved outside of the lines of any reasonable application of justice.”

They’re willing to engage in historic election interference and will burn our norms and Constitution to shreds to try to stop Trump from winning the Presidency again. “It’s called election interference — they’re trying to destroy our reputation so they can win an election. That’s just as bad as doing any of the other things that have been done over the last number of years. I’m an innocent man. I did nothing wrong, I’m innocent and we will prove that very very soundly and hopefully very quickly,” Donald Trump said, in part, in a video post on his Truth Social social media platform on June 8, 2023.
Following the news of his indictment, he also told Fox News Digital, “This is the most corrupt administration in history — there has never been an administration so corrupt, and they’re just starting to find it right now. They are trying to deflect all of their dishonesty by bringing this ridiculous boxes hoax case. They’re not going to get away with it. I did absolutely nothing wrong,” he added, citing the Presidential Records Act, saying it “makes me totally innocent.”

“This is the most important job in the world, the most important seat in the world. Only the best in this country should occupy it. Only someone duly elected by ‘We the People.’ Only someone with the highest integrity. Only someone who cares about all of us. Only someone who speaks intelligently and elegantly,” Maria Shriver tweeted alongside images of the Oval Office, adding, “We should never have someone in this office who ridicules people, who incites people, or who bullies people. I know everyone is innocent until proven guilty in this country, but we the people deserve someone whose innocence isn’t in question! #TrumpIndictment.”

House Republicans will hold this brazen weaponization of power accountable.” –U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy

“Like all Americans, Mr. Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence. The government has the burden of proving its charges beyond a reasonable doubt and securing a unanimous verdict by a South Florida jury.
“By all appearances, the Justice Department and special counsel have exercised due care, affording Mr. Trump the time and opportunity to avoid charges that would not generally have been afforded to others.
“Mr. Trump brought these charges upon himself by not only taking classified documents, but by refusing to simply return them when given numerous opportunities to do so.
