Kathleen Teresa Owens, 94, of Spring Lake, passed away on June 1, 2023. Known
by her friends as Kathy, and her family as ‘Babe,’ she led a life dedicated to
family, friends, and service.
Kathleen was born in Newark, NJ on October 6, 1928 and graduated from Our
Lady of Good Counsel High School in 1947. She and Jack married in 1948 and
moved to Clifton, NJ in 1951, where they raised their family. While she and her
husband Jack were raising their seven children, she served as a Eucharistic
Minister, and as a Minister to the Sick with St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in
Clifton, NJ.
After living a vibrant and full life in Clifton for forty years, she and Jack moved to
Spring Lake in 1991. In Spring Lake many new passions and friendships
blossomed, among them around her love of quilting. Kathy belonged to the
‘Circle of Friends’ quilt group, and participated in regular meetings and service
projects. In addition to the quilt group, she loved being a member of the Belmar
Fishing Club; the people, events, restaurant, as well as sitting on the pier over the
ocean all made her heart sing. She loved the beach, sun, the ocean, and especially
meeting up with friends on the boardwalk.
Kathy is survived by her husband, John Owens, of Spring Lake, NJ and their seven
children, John and wife, Ann, of Belmar, NJ, Michael of Tampa, FL, Maureen and
wife, Carol, of Seneca Falls, NY, Betsy and husband, Lloyd, of Milford, DE, Anne
and husband, Gene, of Red Bank, NJ, Claire and husband, Eric, of Belmont, CA,
David of Manitowoc, WI. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
A memorial mass was celebrated on June 6, 2023 at St. Catherine’s Church in
Spring Lake, NJ.
Donations can be made in Kathy’s name to The American Littoral Society or
FulFill Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
