Gordon George Bird, age 86, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at his home in Manasquan. Born in Plainfield, NJ, Gordon grew up in North Plainfield. He raised his family in Martinsville with his wife MaryLou, and spent summers in Manasquan from the age of 6.
Gordon was a builder, avid woodworker and owner of W.L. Bird and Son, working alongside his father for many years. He enjoyed restoring and touring in his antique cars and was often found in his workshop sharing his skills with friends and family on their latest project. He was kind, honest and direct with his guiding advice, and his quiet demeanor spoke volumes. He was a permanent fixture on the beachfront and had a wave and a smile for all from his front porch. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his wife and family. Each and every one of them knew how much he loved them from his actions and his words.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, MaryLou Bird; his daughters, BettyLou McGivney (Mark), Susan Bird Becker (Karl) and Nancy Bird Sonett (Josh); his sister, Martha Diana; his 11 grandchildren, Hope, Sophie, Alden, Mae, Tessa, MaryLou, Sally, Caroline (Isaac), Jarrod (Randi), Cole and Judson, and his great-grandson, Leo.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford, Wall, NJ on June 2, 2023 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm with a Memorial Service to take place at 6:30 pm.
