Michael E. Wilbert, a resident of Wall Township, NJ, passed away on December 24, 2022. He was born in Ocean County, NJ, the son of Theodore and Mary Wilbert. He was 82.
A renowned and skilled civil and criminal trial attorney, Mike obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1971 from Rutgers University School of Law and passed the New Jersey Bar following his graduation. Mike had a reputation for his aggressive representation of clients in every level, from municipal courts to the United States Supreme Court. Notably, his legacy included multi-million-dollar civil verdicts, victoriously arguing the merits of an immunity agreement before the U.S. Supreme Court in the Portash case, defending Great Adventure in the haunted house fire case, as well as defending large corporate executives and thousands of clients in criminal cases.
The youngest child and brother of five sisters, Mike enjoyed growing up in Bay Head, where he was a lifeguard. Later, he served as a prosecutor and volunteer fireman.
Before becoming an attorney, Michael proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, where he also played football. He is rumored to have been a ‘walk on’ for the New York Jets. The length and extent of Mike’s tenure with the Jets is known only to Michael. His passion for football continued throughout his life, as evidenced by his being a Giants season ticket holder for 50 years.
In celebration of his academic achievements after graduating Law School with Honors, Mike embraced the challenge by climbing the Matterhorn. He loved the outdoors to the extent that he bought homes in Durango, Colorado and Placitas, New Mexico. He loved to sing, often blasting the car radio to Pink Floyd, and sang in the Four Seasons Chorus.
Mike treated everyone equally with respect and value. His humor kept the atmosphere light and encouragingly positive.
Mike is survived by Darlene, the love of his life, who he married on May 24, 1997, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. with a service and military honors being held at 6:00 p.m. at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35, Wall, NJ 07719.
