RADNOR – Radnor High School officials this week announced that Jim Gardner, former anchor for 6ABC News in Philadelphia, will deliver the commencement address to the Class of 2023 on June 7, 2023, at Villanova University.
According to a press release announcing Gardner’s participation, school officials said seniors at Radnor High School produced a short video asking Mr. Gardner to be their commencement speaker.
Michael McNicholas, a Radnor High School senior and executive director of student affairs, said he, and Senior Class President PJ Duffy, spoke with Principal Mrs. PT Kevgas about a speaker. They all agreed that the commencement speaker should be someone the students “can look up to, learn from, and be familiar with. Mr. Gardner is a perfect example of this.”
Nicholas described Gardner as “a local legend and a Radnor parent who has stayed dedicated to our schools even after his children graduated.”
In a video released late Friday afternoon, Naomi Gross, valedictorian of the class of 2023 and Mia Xie, salutatorian for the class of 2023, were discussing the upcoming graduation when Gardner suddenly steps into the frame.
“I am thrilled to be part of this exciting milestone,” Gardner said in the video. “I have the honor of delivering this year’s commencement address to the class of 2023. Congratulations to both of you and to all of this year’s graduates.
The students were thrilled when Gardner accepted their invitation to speak.
“We are honored to have Jim Gardner join us as the keynote speaker for our graduation ceremony,” said Mrs. Kevgas. “Mr. Gardner’s vast experience in journalism and his commitment to his community will undoubtedly inspire our seniors to pursue their passions and make a difference in their own communities.”
Gardner was a fixture in the Philadelphia media market for over 40 years, covering major news events and bringing the latest updates to viewers every evening on 6ABC News. He has earned numerous accolades for his work, including being inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame.
