The family of Lorraine Stanley, age 71 of Brielle, NJ, is sad to announce her passing at home on May 2, 2023, with her husband George and children by her side.
Born in Oceanside, NY to the late Harold J. and Olga (Rascius) Schanck, Lorraine first lived in Valley Stream, NY, and spent most of her childhood in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. She attended Blessed Sacrament Grammar School in Valley Stream, NY, Our Lady of Mercy Grammar School in Park Ridge, NJ, Rosary Academy High School in Sparkill, NY, and graduated from Marymount College in Washington, DC, all where she met many lifelong friends. Lorraine began her career in publishing at Prentice Hall and as the story goes, met her future husband George on the cafeteria line. They were married a few years later at Our Lady Mother of the Church in Woodcliff Lake, NJ.
Lorraine and George created a beautiful family life in River Vale, NJ where weeknight dinners together were always by candlelight and Friday pizza nights were sacred, with an open invitation to the Stanley kitchen table for all friends. Lorraine was a leading example of what it meant to be a career mom, dedicating her life to raising her two children and being the rock of her family. She may hold the title for most volunteered time spent as class mom, took the role of sports mom seriously, insisted on being the “call me 24/7, no questions asked” mom, and was a second mother to so many. She also guided children in her community, as a humble caring servant, teaching CCD at St. John the Baptist Church in Hillsdale, NJ.
Once empty-nesters, home became Brielle, NJ, where Friday pizza nights continued, and a coastal living lifestyle at the Jersey Shore was fully embraced. Lorraine mastered the art of weekend entertaining, including kicking off patriotic holidays with lobster rolls, flag cakes, and her signature preppy striped attire.
One of Lorraine’s favorite songs was “What a Wonderful World” and she truly did enjoy the wonderful world around her. She was an animal lover and especially adored her miniature schnauzers. Lorraine spent countless weekends in the mountains of Vermont, appreciated and designed beautiful gardens in her yard, enjoyed watching boats pass through the Squan inlet, and looked out for sea life from the Spring Lake boardwalk daily, where she walked thousands of miles with friends.
Lorraine poured her creativity into crafts and watercolor painting. She always had on a big smile while hitting the slopes and later traded in skis for golf clubs. She was an avid reader who frequented the Brielle Public Library. Lorraine was at her happiest basking in the sun on a pool float, preferably in Bermuda.
With an always b-positive attitude and competitive spirit, she was a super fan cheering from the sidelines of endless youth sports, Pascack Valley, and Monmouth University games. How meaningful that Lorraine’s last outing with her entire family was attending a MU Hawks basketball game together.
The key to her beautiful, 47-year marriage with George was always laughing at his jokes and celebrating the simple things in life. Together, whether at home or on their travels, they always found a reason to share a celebratory champagne toast. Her effortless class and wonderful life will always be celebrated by family and friends who loved her laugh, beautiful smile, and appreciated her gift of making ordinary moments feel special.
In addition to her husband George, Lorraine is loved by her children and their families, Alison Stanley and her husband William Worfolk of Rumson, NJ, and Christopher Stanley and his wife Cristina of Fair Haven, NJ. She was the proud and most adored Mimi of five grandchildren, Will, Conrad, Wes, Ford, and Winnie.
Lorraine was the protective sister to her twin brother, John Schanck, and wife, Laura of Madison, NJ; and special aunt to many nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law. She was predeceased by her sister, Kathy Wennerberg, and her brother, James Schanck.
Friends may greet Lorraine’s family on Monday, May 8th from 4:00-8:00 pm at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd.,Wall, NJ, 07719. A Celebration Mass will be held at St. Denis Church, 90 Union Ave.,Manasquan, NJ 08736 on Tuesday, May 9th at 10:00am. Interment will be private.
In honor of Lorraine, a gourmet cook who found joy in serving others, memorial donations may be made to Fulfill Food Pantry of Monmouth County, St. Vincent DePaul Society of the Church of St. Denis, Manasquan, or a local food pantry of your choice.
Lorraine’s family would like to extend their immense gratitude to the many incredible nurses that provided compassionate care to Lorraine during her brief but fierce illness.
