Lamp shades have been having a moment in design for a while now. And I’m so here for it! Give me all the colors, pleats, and textures! Patterned lamp shades especially are so fun as they add a punch of personality to a space. They’re like small works of art. And that’s exactly what I had in mind when I busted out my paintbrushes and decided to give this shade in my teenage daughter’s bedroom an argyle pattern. Inspired by the Miu Miu sweater Taylor Swift is wearing in the photoshoot for the Lover album, this DIY painted argyle lampshade could not be more fun in her whimsical space, and it was so easy to execute!
Love me a quick and easy DIY project! You can check out just how simple this pattern was to create in this reel here. But basically, if you can cut out a diamond shape to use as a stencil, you’re golden.
DIY DETAILS: After penciling the pattern around the shade, I used acrylic paint and some latex wall paint (colors used in the mural) to fill in the diamonds. Little tip – use a dry paintbrush to keep the paint from bleeding (unless of course, you want more of a watercolor effect). The lighter colors needed two coats for coverage, but a single coat was sufficient for the darker colors.
From start to finish it took about 2 hours, and I couldn’t be more in love with the finished look! I’ve always loved a classic argyle pattern, and this happy color palette gives it such a cheery vibe. Paired with the mural it’s just all kinds of goodness. And most importantly, my girl loves it!
Slowly but surely her bedroom is coming together, and it’s been so fun to work with her to bring her ideas to life. She may be off to college in a year, but she’s already told me I’m never allowed to paint over this mural. Fine by me, her room is one of the happiest rooms in our house!
Handpainted murals might be *emotionally* difficult to paint over, but lampshades are easily replaced. ? However, if you’re not quite ready to try your hand at painting one……..
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8
There are so many gorgeous patterned lampshades up for grabs right now! And a new shade is the easiest, quickest way to give an old lamp new life and bring a fresh perspective to a space!
It’s hard to choose a favorite out of the 8 shades up above, but number 5 has my wheels turning. It’s a chandelier shade, and I just know there is a vintage chandelier out there somewhere that is just dying for a colorful update! ? Can you imagine how gorgeous that would be?!
I’m also a big fan of the classic look of number 6, as it reminds me of the shades on the lamps in my bedroom. And you will not believe how good the price is for the size!
What are your thoughts on patterned shades? Love ’em or leave ’em?
Rounded up a few more here…..
