Kung Fu Tea recently celebrated its newest location with a ribbon cutting at 73 Halsey St. inside 48 New, a new building on the Rutgers University – Newark campus and close to Newark college campuses like New Jersey Institute of Technology and Essex County College.
The Halsey Street location is the second location for owner Cindy Perez.
“Kung Fu Tea is a terrific addition to the 48 New Street retail space and we are thrilled to welcome them to Downtown Newark. Rutgers University – Newark is excited to support a women-led small business and looks forward to welcoming other local businesses and entrepreneurs to the area,” Amber Randolph, senior vice chancellor, administration, economic development, and chief financial officer at Rutgers-Newark, said.
Kung Fu Tea is America’s largest bubble tea brand, with over 350 locations across the U.S. It is well known for offering drinks such as Coconut Milk Tea, Mango Green Tea, Oreo Slush, Red Bean Wow, Strawberry Cream and many more.
Attendees of the event were able to enjoy the night with music by DJ Popido and samples of drinks. Students with a student ID received 10% off their order. For Rutgers students, there was even a special drink available at the event inspired by the mascot, Scarlet Raiders.
“We’re so excited to bring Kung Fu Tea to Newark! We specialize in bubble tea, also known as ‘boba.’ At Kung Fu Tea, every drink is made to order with real tea. I grew up drinking bubble tea and introduced my husband to it. He was hooked. We currently have a location in Montclair and are so happy to be in Newark,” Perez said.
“We are excited to welcome Kung Fu Tea to the bustling Halsey Street neighborhood. We know their teas will be welcome to students, faculty and staff at Rutgers, as well as all Newark residents and employees in the area. Most of all, we congratulate Cindy on investing in Newark,” Marcus Randolph, CEO of Invest Newark, Newark’s economic development agency said.
