A local cat is undergoing surgery after being shot in the leg, and it will soon be up for adoption at the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge.
PeeWee is a 3-year old-cat whose leg was shattered by a projectile, likely a bullet, the remnants of which remain in her leg. She was able to drag herself home after being shot, but her owners couldn’t afford to provide for her care so she was surrendered to the shelter. It is not known where PeeWee was shot.
PeeWee underwent surgery Tuesday at Oradell Animal Hospital, the shelter’s cat kennel manager Rebecca Siffel said.
Unfortunately, PeeWee’s leg needs to be amputated. But after surgery, she will be placed in a foster home to recover before becoming available for adoption in the next few weeks.
PeeWee will need to relearn how to walk on three legs and might be hesitant to leap up on things at first. But a recovery shouldn’t take too long.
“Once she’s able to go to a home, a lot of her restrictions will be lifted,” Siffel said.
PeeWee is still a young cat and still has a bright future. Perhaps that future could be in your home.
A fundraiser for PeeWee raised more than $1,000 as of Tuesday.
