Elmer H. Schmieder of Brielle, NJ, died at home surrounded by friends and family on March 20, 2023 at age 94. Beloved husband of the late Alice F. Schmieder (née Gebhardt), he is survived by his children; Sue Ann McWade and husband Jim of Brielle, NJ, Cynthia Korn and her husband John of Charlotte Courthouse, VA, and James Schmieder and his wife Lorette of Manasquan, NJ. His loving grandchildren include Michael and Jeffrey Korn, Patrick and Paige McWade, and Elyse, Stephen and Alexander Schmieder, and his great grandchildren Lily and Charlotte Korn.
Educated in the Newark school system, Elmer retired in 1987 after 32 years with Public Service Gas & Electric Company. He worked on the design of the Salem and Hope Creek nuclear generating plants, serving as lead mechanical designer for the Hope Creek project, retiring as assistant manager nuclear engineering design.
Elmer served two years in the United States Army from 1951-1953, in Munich, Germany. He loved and enjoyed his grandchildren and family. Gardening, woodworking, golf and watercolor painting were among his hobbies. If something needed fixing, Grandpa would get the job!
A memorial Mass will be held on April 14 at 10 am at St. Denis Church in Manasquan, NJ. Elmer and Alice’s cremains will rest in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, NJ. Donations in his name may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or a charity of your choice.
