About the Park
The Schuylkill Canal Park boasts a number of outdoor recreational experiences. This site is a treasure trove for nature lovers featuring areas for wildflower walks, premier birding paths, a favorite local fishing spot, a public boat launch, and a five-mile water loop trail. Beautiful views of the Schuylkill River make for a pleasant visiting experience. Picnic tables are available along the River.
In addition to its outdoor beauty, the site holds many pieces of historical interest. A fully restored, working lock on the Schuylkill Canal, originally built as part of the Schuylkill Navigation system, is demonstrated for groups and during special events by the Schuylkill Canal Association. This lock, one of 72 originally built on the canal, was constructed in the 1820s and was originally part of the Oakes Reach. The site includes the original Locktender’s house as well as canal information and memorabilia. The house is open by appointment and during special events.
The site, purchased by Montgomery County from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Mine Reclamation in 2010, is managed in partnership with the Schuylkill Canal Association. View more information about the Schuylkill Canal Association. For all special event information please contact the Schuylkill Canal Association at 610-917-0021 or at their website: https://schuylkillcanal.org/
The park welcomes leashed dogs. Owners are responsible to monitor their pet’s behavior and dispose of waste.
Note: There is no swimming, jumping or diving at Lock 60.
Trails
The Schuylkill River Trail of the county trail system provides visitors easy access to the Lock and recreational area. Some areas are “on road” for bicyclists.
The Schuylkill East Trail is mainly a natural surface trail which connects to the Schuylkill River Trail at Rt. 29 in Mont Clare. The trail follows the in road to Lock 60 where visitors then cross the small canal bridge, bearing left onto the trail. The trail will lead you to Upper Schuylkill Valley Park as the terminus. Parking can be found at Upper Schuylkill Valley Park and Lock 60. This trail, less than 2 miles, is a bird lover’s paradise.
