A highly anticipated film sequel is set to film in Belleville this week, meaning its superstar cast will set foot in North Jersey.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is being shot at the shuttered Essex County Isolation Hospital, which is standing in for the infamous Arkham Asylum, where the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) meets Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga).
“A good portion of the community is very excited for such a major motion picture being filmed right here in Belleville,” Township Manager Anthony Iacono said.

In anticipation of the shoot, Iacono said the township has an emergency management plan in place because of the possibility of large crowds.
Iacono said he hopes the plan will reduce any inconvenience to the residents who live nearby.
Mayor Michael Melham said in a Facebook post that certain roads will be closed and that residents will need to show ID to access them. He also warned people not to trespass, since the hospital is private property.
Built in 1932, the Essex County Isolation Hospital in the Soho section of Belleville harkens back to an era when infectious diseases like tuberculosis, polio and typhoid ran rampant through North Jersey. It sits on top of a hill in order to keep the infected away from the rest of the public.
“It’s an incredible piece of architecture, a magical place,” Michael Perrone, the president of the Belleville Historical Society, told The Record in 2020. “That building made a very big statement. It was a monument to the public health system.”
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is a musical sequel to 2019’s “Joker,” for which Joaquin Phoenix won the Academy Award for best actor. The sequel is set to be released in 2024.
